Worth It! (Things to try, read, watch, hear, and discuss)

I wrote a post last year about unconventional holiday music (one of my favorite early posts) and I definitely have my offbeat holiday tunes on shuffle right now. I’m also mixing in more traditional music, and I have absolutely fallen in love with Idina Menzel’s Christmas: A Season of Love. I’ve been a Menzel fan since Rent hit the scene back in 1996, and of course I adored her performances as Elphaba in Wicked and Elsa in Frozen. She is, without question, one of my favorite musical artists, and this album is fantastic.

Every song is a winner, but I especially enjoy her duet with Ariana Grande, which pays tribute to an unsung holiday hero:

And a stunning medley of two classic songs:

The album is available everywhere, and if you’re an Amazon Prime member, it’s included in the free streaming service.

Nothing says Christmas like banjos… (IMO)

I’ve been indulging in bluegrass lately.

We are stuck in a rut. The Christmas music from our childhood (Bing Crosby’s White Christmas and Nat King Cole’s Christmas Song) and from our early married years (Bony M Happy Christmas and Carpenters Christmas Portrait) are still our favourites. The Chieftains Bells of Dublin is also in there. Now that you got me thinking, I need to go put some of this on, right now……………………

You can’t go wrong with the classics, but I like seeing what else is out there.

Love the Mrs. Claus song! Very fun. Odetta’s Mary Had a Baby is a family favorite. And for Hanukkah songs we like Ocho Kandelikas. : )

  5. I love the old Christmas music!! Michael Buble’s album is very good too. There’s a 98 Degrees album that I really enjoy. It was what I grew up listening to!! Miraculum by Lincoln Brewster is a great instrumental Christmas song. Something About December by Christina Perri. You’re A Mean One, Mr Grinch by Small Town Titans. Amy Grant – Home for Christmas is good

Home for Christmas is a family favorite. We listen to it at my parents’ house every year. 🙂

  6. Idina has quite an interesting voice with no prob hitting the highs. My fav is Nat King Cole’s version of O Holy Night, an oldie for sure. For bringing on a tear or two, it’s Old Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg. But that’s more of a song for reminiscing. Keep up the good work, Amanda. Looking forward to more.
