Worth It! (Things to try, read, watch, hear, and discuss)

The ability to access work resources remotely has greatly increased over the course of my professional life, and it can be a mixed blessing. Sometimes (not often, but occasionally) I regret being so plugged in, as it can allow work issues to intrude in situations where I’d prefer they stay more distant. Generally, though, I like staying connected, and today I’m supremely glad for those resources, because the weather outside is frightful.

We’re in the middle of a winter storm that’s been coming through in waves. All the schools are closed, the Missouri Department of Transportation is recommending delaying or avoiding the morning commute, and I’m spending the day working from the comfort and safety of my living room. Here’s what’s been going on:

Sunday, 10:00 am

snow-new-10-am.png

The snow started around 9:00, and by 10:00 there was just a light dusting. However, it began to pick up shortly after I took the photos above.

Sunday, 11:00 am

snow-11-am.png

By 11:00, the snow was definitely noticeable, but we were just getting started. The forecast called for heavy snowfall in the afternoon/evening, with the heaviest accumulation predicted at a rate of an inch per hour.

Sunday, 3:00 pm

snow-3pm.png

By 3:00, we had a lot of snow on the ground, but the heaviest period was behind us. For Sunday, anyway.

Sunday, 9:00 pm

The snow stopped in the early evening, and the plows were out, but we were warned that it wasn’t over. The forecast called for freezing rain overnight, and more snow starting late morning and continuing into the evening. By this point, hundreds of schools and businesses had announced that they would be closed on Monday, and many people had decided, or been instructed, to work from home (I was very glad that my organization was one that made the choice not to have us come in today).

Monday, 4:00 am

I woke up early (as usual), and learned that while a lot of progress was made in clearing the roads, people were still being urged to stay home if possible, especially since there’s more snow on the way.

Monday, 5:00 am

Updated forecast predicts an additional 2-5 inches of snow before the storm moves out of the area around midnight. It will be interesting to see exactly when things taper off, and whether the plows are able to clear things up by morning.

happy snow

How’s the weather in your neck of the woods?

We had our first winter weather event back in November. Not as intense as this one, but enough for schools to close.

Glad you can stay in. Driving can be difficult under those conditions. There are good things also; like good home made (not from pods) hot cocoa and wearing comfortable clothing. Then again, there’s shoveling. Stay warm!

Despite living most of my life in a city that gets snow and ice every winter, I’ve never gotten comfortable driving in it. Until recently, I’ve had a co-worker who lived nearby and was willing to pick me up on icy days, but she changed jobs last year. So I’m very glad to be able to stay home today. And you’re so right about the benefits, especially the comfortable clothing. As for shoveling, I’m blessed with a very kind neighbor who always shovels my driveway, and never lets me pay him. He says it’s his way of paying it forward because I always buy from his kids’ school and activity fundraisers. Really, I couldn’t be in a better position to weather the storm. 🙂

Happy snow day Amanda. We had what I would call “nuisance snow” here on Friday and Saturday. An inch or two at a time, just enough to go out and shovel, but not a ton. Just as you would finish shovelling, the snow would start up again. Repeat. For some reason, drivers in this winter city forgot how to drive and there were about 300 collisions over the two days. It is times like that when I am happy I am retired. My commute is short. Cheers. Allan

Sometimes I envy those of you who are retired, and other times I can’t imagine what I would do with all the free time. 🙂 I’m just glad I have the tools to work at home; I have horrible memories of long, harrowing drives to and from the office, especially when I worked downtown. An hour and a half drive on slick highways, then a three block walk from the parking garage to the building…Nope, I don’t miss that at all.

And after 5 years, I do not miss work one bit. I have enough and more to fill every day, I can go shopping or to museums, art galleries during the week when these places are not busy, I can do home projects on other than weekends. But, you are right, you need hobbies and pursuits before you retire. Cheers. Allan

If nothing else, when I retire (still quite a way in the future), I’ll have so much more reading time! 📚💕😀

  4. If it’s winter then I prefer snow ❄️ better than rain 🌧🤪
Here is a little bit chilly, only 24 degrees Celsius instead of 28-29 😉 rainy season in Singapore 😊

  6. And here I was complaining about the weather in mid-Missouri! It looks like you’ve gotten a lot more than us. Here’s hoping things are a lot clearer tomorrow.

It was totally nuts. And then it was 70 degrees on Christmas. Midwest weather is weird…
